Why no Wireless password prompt?

I have recently set-up a Thomson SpeedtouchST585v6 router, including entering my WPA password.
But everytime I connect to internet, either by cable or wirelessly, I'm never prompted for it
. So am I at risk, and if so what settings do I change?
Or is the password just for shutting out your neighbour/hacker?
I've currently disabled the wireless network because of this. Also when using wireless internet how do you make your SSID (I think thats what its called):o disappear on the "radar"?

Your computer should autoamatically remember the password for the wireless connection. There is no password through a wired connection0

to hide the SSID, there is usually a checkbox in the config pages somewhere0
