Cash gone missing from deposited cheque…

Wandering if anyone has any experience of anything like this happening before?

I deposited a cheque at my local Clydesdale bank from my flatmate for his half of the council tax. It was one of the bank staff who filled in the form and dropped it in the quick deposit box for me - all i had to do was check and sign it - I didn't get a receipt.

Upon checking several days later the money was still not in my account but had come out of my flatmates account!

I have been in the branch to explain the situation but to say they have been unhelpful is an understatement - effectively someone at the bank has lost my money, they should be embarrassed and doing their upmost to sort this out!

What they have told me to do is get my flatmate to get a copy of the back of the cheque from his bank and then I have to take that into my branch - I'm sure this isn't going to be easy and in anycase what would I do ifthe cheque was from a client (who wouldn't go to the hastle of chasing up cheques) and not my flatmate?

I am raging about the incompetence from the bank and their lack of shame in losing my money and the fact they claim they can't do anything until I get a copy of the back of the cheque to them.

rant over and I hope some of you have advice on how to deal with this situation - I've got that horrible feeling that the banks are going to try and fob me off and I'll have to get on to the FSO.

    Hi there,

Can your flatmate ask their bank which account it was paid into?

It could just be that your bank have filled in the paying in slip wrong and got the account number wrong.
This other account may not even exist and the money could have gone into a holding account.

You could ask your bank to provide you with a paying in book. Then in future you can use this for paying cheques. This will act as a reciept because the bank should date stamp the book for you. The book will also have your account details on it, to save any account number errors occuring.

    Hi

I'm going to go into his bank with him on tues to explain the situation and try and sort it out - in my experience with bank staff they will play/be dumb and it's going to be a nightmare to sort out.

    (1) Probably get problems in getting information about the account - data protection act likely to be quoted!

    (2) Only get a date stamp receipt if you pay in over the counter, not via the ATM.

was only trying to give advice to OP.

OP did state that a bank staff member filled in the form for them.

Wasn't criticising you, just pointing out probable reality of the bank's interpretation of data protection regulations and that the OP had referred to the quick deposit box rather than paying in over the counter.

And of course you are right in that pre-printed slips from a paying-in book means that the account numbers will definitely be correct when using an ATM or quick deposit facility.

Go back into your Bank and ask to see the quick deposit envelope that was used (they keep them at the branch). Check the details on the envelope, if there are any. The bank then use the details from the deposit envelope to trace where the money has gone. It is not up to your flatmate to provide a copy of the cheque at this early stage, before your bank have even made any effort to trace your credit. Quick deposits are promoted as being as secure as paying in at the counter so the fact that your deposit is acknowledged by the bank(they keep a record of all QDs) is as good as a receipt. Insist that they make some attempt to trace your credit - it is their duty to do so.

It is a common error when filling in deposit slips to pay in a cheque to put the account number from the cheque you are paying in on the slip, rather than your own account number - get them to check this out first!

I have insisted that they should be able to trace it, they are saying that because I do not know the exact date and time it was deposited it is impossible for them to do so.

In that case, the date that the cheque cleared your flatmate's account should at least narrow it down to a couple of days. How many QDs envelopes would they have to check?

Your flatmate's bank can chase it.

And btw you've learnt an important lesson - always get a receipt when paying in at a bank.
