Strewth have you got through yet? Ah yes the great "fantastic job at the end of a Master's degree" ....I have a Master's degree and I'm working as a medical secretary (can't afford to a do a PhD and funding for my area is like hen's teeth...). I too worked my way through Uni (why didn't I go when all my mates did straight from school in the 1980s as I would have been fully funded? Probably because we couldn't afford it that's why) even taking weeks off to do a week's temping work and doing a full day office job and then an evening typist job in the holidays so I fully understand where you're coming from on that score. Still, better finding out now about the financial "issues" than a couple of years down the line and having to untangle finances. I have seen people arguing about who paid for a radiator.....
But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green :D

ooh! I never knew that...I just look at my recent posts and go from there.....

I always go into favorite and add(from the task bar), then when the thread has moved on a few pages, do the same again but delete the first one. That way you are always roughly in the correct place! Hope this helps

  • Hello. Finally off the phone. THe lady was very helpful and non judgemental- I also had a discussion about the amount of people in similar circumstances and debt. Quite staggering as she is in the know. Talked through 4 options available to me- 1) debt consolidation- NO WAY ME THINKS- no more loans!
    2) Debt management program- i) I can approach creditors by letter myself to freize interest and pay less on pro rata basis- creditors share amount of money between them or ii) The NDL can get third party to negotiate for me with the creditors for free and they arrange a monthly payment which you pay them and they pay creditors, this is something you can pull out of at any stage not legally binding like IVA.... but DMP may go on forever and ever...
    3) IVA- again a maybe, Possibilty of 60% of debt wiped out; five years of hard budgeting and then over...but nasty credit rating similar to Bankrupcy
    4) The dreaded 'B'- last option ever!

She will send me information on all of the above and I will be making a long and hard decision- hopefully tomorrow. Trying to sort my car today to a more economical, diesel HP car- don't want more debt from it so will have to bargain hard!! My current car will go up in tax next year, even though it is 5 yrs old.... All to do with the emissions!
Any ideas about getting a new car with a HP car....very welcome? Am I tied to the same company I got my car from originally!? x

Not a clue on the car front. My feeling would be to not go for anything that's going to jepordise your credit rating so it would seem that negotiation is the first option (well, if I were you that is). I would also get them to do the negotiating as they will be used to it and not "put off/intimidated" by the CC companies. It is, however, for you to decide and it would be better to wait until you have the documents infront of you. If negotiation fails you can always revisit your options. I'll pop back later! :D

It's addictive. Starts off with dodgy wallpaper, then dodgy curtains, the art some people put on their wall is dreadful and next thing it's the garden, the state of their plants...... oh it's hours of fun!!! :rotfl:

Also, on the HP car front. If you look at your paperwork, you may find there is an option to give it back legally after a certain amount of payments have been made. Usually 50% which equate to probably the original value of the car. Have a quick shufty at the original paperwork it will tell you. At this point you can usually make a negotiated payment to clear it off, or hand back the car and buy another one outright if you can get the dosh together.

Lots of folk also do their own self managed dmp, so it may be worth having a look on the dmp supporters thread. I might add, never include any phone nos in original correspondence, and always do any contact via paperwork or you phoning them. Also when phoning them, especially MBNA, ignore the phone messages at the beginning which asks for you phone no for security purposes..they will still put you through to an adviser.

Sorry about the butt in, hope the info about the car is correct.

    Good luck BOBx
