Bay window - damp patch on ceiling

Hi,
Please can any one help with more damp problems!!
I have a bay window and there is a damp patch on the ceiling so I think the roof of the bay (on the outside) may be leaking.
The roof seems to have some kind of gritty roof covering. On top of this was piles of gravel and lots of moss. I cleared the moss and (in the process, some of the gravel).
How can I waterproof the root to cure the ceiling damp spot?
I have a tin of some black paint stuff which is called roof seal. Could I scrape off all the gravel, paint this on and then should I put more gravel there - I'm not sure the purpose of the gravel and if it should be there or not?
Many thanks for any tips.

You could try the roof seal, but it may be best to re-felt the roof.
The stones are there to prevent damage from the sun- well that is what I was told, it could be wrong!0 -
Sounds like it is done with mineral felt. The gravel is there to absorb the heat of the sun.You could repair it with something like roof seal but it is probably better in the long run to have it refelted.0

It is probably a Felt covered roof and the gravel was put on the top of the felt to protect it from the suns rays. (To keep it cool).
Felt has only a limited life span and I think you should let a professional have a look at it.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
Hello,
Many thanks for the helpful replies.
You learn something new every day! I had no idea that was why the gravel was up there - as I've managed to take most of it off when clearing the moss I'd better hurry up and sort this out before all those lovely long sunny days we'll hopefully be getting soon...!
