Soundproofing fireplace

We have a walk through lounge/dining room with two beautiful fireplaces. Next door hasn't knocked through their two rooms so have a separate living room and dining room. The problem is that we can hear them through the walls and as we have one big room there is no escape! I think alot of the noise is coming through the firplaces so wondered if there was anything I could do to sound proof them. We don't use the fiirplaces but they are open. One has a pull down flap but the other one hasn't and we get lots of stuff coming down it especially when it rains hard. Could I just get a black bin bag , put it up the chimney and then stuff it with loft insullation? Would that be a fire risk (again the fireplaces are never used)? I have tried the chimney balloons and they were useless. Thanks for any suggestions.
I would if I could but I can't so I won't!

Chimney balloons? I've not come across those. Previously, I have wrapped loft insulation around a piece of 40mm plastic pipe, and stuffed that up a chimney. This reduced drafts and falling debris, but allowed the chimney to breathe. Bin liner does not sound so good
After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
    To dissolve the people
    And elect another?
