Just made reduntant on Monday

Hi all

very new to posting so please be nice to me.

Got made redundant from my job on Monday (a job I only started 2 weeks ago and which I left a job of 10 years to go to because they said they were going places and need someone like me to help them get there and organise them!).

On Tuesday I applied for income support, as I was told this would be better as I am a single mother of 2 children, daughter who is 16 and in full time education and son who is 6, and I would not have to go to the job centre every two weeks to sign on.

I am desprate to get a job as I contacted my bank on Monday to explain that I was made redundant, they have increase my overdraugh to £4k from £3k to cover all my insurances and utilities bills which all come off by DD. I have cancelled my Council Tax (phoned them to tell them that I was doing this) and I have also changed my mortgage payment from 1st of month to 28th and cancelled the DD (on their instruction).

My 2 year fixed is due up on 31/05/08 and it is a repayment mortgage which was going to increase by £150 a month on 01/06/08, so I have changed it to an interest only which is fixed for 2 years at 6.69%. They have told me they cannot give me a holiday and it will effect my credit rating if I miss a payment! I do have insurance for redundancy but it does not kick in for 13 weeks and then it is a further 4 weeks from then but that is only when I have sent the form back completed, which has to be filled in by my employer (who no longer exists so have to send it to the firm who is dealing with the liquidation) and then to the social then back to them and it is when they receive it then they start to process it as a new claim!

HELP! I do not even know what I am going to be awarded and I have no idea what to do about all the bills and the mortgage that has to be paid.

Any advice would be most gratefully welcolme.

    Hi wee_den,

    Welcome to MSE.

If you enter some figures into the benefits calculator on www.entitledto.co.uk, it will give you an idea of your entitlement.

Have you informed tax credits that you are no longer working? If not, you need to do this also.

    Anything else, just ask! x

    Thank you

I have also spoke to tax credits who could not tell me what I am entitled to either and they will write to me, why is everything so slow when people do not have any money coming in? Income support 10 days and same for tax credits!

My son is at an out of school care facility which I have paid up to the end of the month and they have said they will keep his place open for a further two weeks after this, but then it will have to be let go, so then if I do get a job then I have no child care! It just seems that I am crumbling at the moment with all the pressure.

Sorry for offloading, just wanted to know if I am missing anything or anything further I should be doing?

Just a wee thought but could you not phone your old employer and explain what has happened and see if they could take you back?

It sounds like you have everything covered, but sadly the system tends to be very slow when people need it the most.

Good idea from Loopy Girl to approach your old employer - would that be a possibility? x

Not a possibility, he took the huff big time and he is the type of person that once you do something against him, he holds it against you for life! Not the best way to get on in business but he is not very mature in that respect and he was a bully anyway and I was really glad to be leaving him! I believe things happen for a reason so hopefully this goes in my favour.

That is a positive way to look at it, it means that something better is round the corner.

Hope you find your next (bigger and better ;) ) job v soon x

    Ah never mind.

Panic ye not though! You have a month by the sounds of it (increased o/d) and that is a long time when looking for a job. It also puts you in a superb position when you are at interviews as you can start immediately.

I know it's a bummer that things are so slow benefit money wise but they do backdate to date of claim.

Get yourself on the internet and a CV done and then tart yourself (in the nicest posible way obviously!!) round the recruitment agencies on Tuesday.

You have a great attitude so just keep that :)

p.s DMG - are you going to see SATC next week?! have my ticket booked already...sooo excited!!!!!

Helps if i read all the thread before posting!

In that case can you not try temping to at least get some money coming in? may not be the type of work you want long term but its better than nothing. Plus most agency stuff is weekly pay so no long wait to get paid.

Oh yes! 10.30am on Wednesday (I'm not usually dressed by that time!). Then straight to the Slug and Lettuce for a Cosmopolitan! x
