I mentioned on here earlier that I ship many things from America, still the only thing they charge me for is guitars I import. Think it depends largely on the size of the parcel as to whether they notice it. If only the guitars could be sent in small boxes :(
I agree that larger higher value items are more likely to be charged but I have been charged for CD's in the past. I ordered 3 CD'scoming to about £24 and I had to pay import duty and VAT and a £3.50 collection charge. It added over £7 in total. I have been lucky once though and got a guitar through from Japan without paying any duties at all, I was expecting it to be about £70 so I was well happy! I now have my guitars sent from Japan by sea, it only costs £27 but it does take about 9 weeks. However it is about £50 less than air mail which is about £60 after the savings on duty, it is quite a saving if you can stand the wait.

My order was for £26 and I had to pay £13 in costs on delivery. Definitely put me off buying from this site again.

Keep your purchases to below £18 (before postage) to avoid taxes!!
This is not the fault of the website, they are US based and it is YOUR resposibility to check this first and decide if the savings are still worth the trouble. With the dollar being so weak at the moment my guess would be that it is still worth doing.
£8 collection fee is a bit steep though on a small item.
Incidentally, items from within the EU are not liable for Taxes or duties and can still offer subsatantial savings. It's just not as easy unless you can speak the language of the country you are buying from.
