Hi all - hope you can help a newbie (and computer dunce) out. I took advantage of the nifty Dell offer a couple of weeks ago and since my shiny computer arrived I've been checking the various features. Anyway I've discovered that it doesn't seem to be picking up any signal from the microphone in programs like Yahoo or even in the Test Hardware section of Sounds And Audio Devices in the Windows control panel. The mic does work in Sound Recorder though. It's just a standard headset (not USB) and works fine on my friend's laptop.
According to Sounds And Audio Devices I have:
Sigmatel High Definition Audio Codec
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
I've tried the following things:
- Plugging the microphone into the correct ports on the front and the back of the computer.
- In Volume Control I've gone into Recording Control and selected Line In, Rear Mic and Microphone in turn, adjusted the volumes and also activated the Microphone Boost features. There is no Microphone panel in Playback Control, or the ability to make one appear in the properties area. The only panels available are:
Volume Control
Wave
SW Synth
CD Player
Input Monitor
- I've downloaded the Sigmatel driver file from the Dell website and re-installed it.
After looking around on the Dell forums it looks like some laptop owners have had similiar probs with Sigmatel and used a registry fix to sort it out, but it's not at the same location on my computer. Anyone know where to find it, or any other solution? Cheers.

Hmmm maybe all those new Dimension 5100s have the same problem. Dell must be stingy when it comes to sound.0
