Bank a/c combo for mother

Please can anyone suggest a good bank current a/c combo for my elderly retired mother.
She has occasional large cheques (thousands) coming in and going out at assorted times so part 1 is a cheque a/c which pays good interest on larger amounts which doesn't rely on a specific amount being paid in each month and which she can use a cheque book (not card with PIN - poor eyesight) to get money out locally (I guess that means writing cheques to CASH at the post office).

Part 2 is an a/c for more general use, i.e. standing orders, direct debits to hold larger amounts of money.

The best I can come up with is smile and Covernty a/c, but are there any better options?
Thanks,
Jeddy

Does she not have an existing account?

This is purely my opinion but cheque accounts should be just that , savings accounts should be separate.
As long as transfers can be done instantly between accounts most banks can offer you the service you require.

Two last points - have you considered asking your mother for a third party access to her accounts so that you can keep an eye on things (through internet banking perhaps)?
The issue of cheque guarantee cards is slowly being phased out by a lot of banks but she could get a chip and signature card to make withdrawals.

She does indeed have an HSBC a/c, but that pays virtually nothing.
I agree that a cueque a/c should only be that, however because my sister and I can't keep an eye on incomings and outgoings all the time we do need to ensure a modest balance to keep mum out of trouble (or debt!)
I think we may be forced down the Nationwide route as apparently the Post Office don't do chip and signature with any accounts they provide services for, or cash cheques.

If anyone can suggest an a/c with a half decent interest rate on all monies (or at least higher than the £3k Nationwide offers and only then if you pay in £1k per month) I'd be interested to know.

    Thanks,
    Jeddy
