It is the apathy of people like you that keep this cr*p government in power

If I am apathetic, what does it make you if you really believe that a petition website set up by the biggest charlatan to have ever run this country would ever be anything than yet another Government run PR gimmick ??

I am an optimist. What you think about you bring about.

If everyone felt like you the Berlin Wall would still be in place, blacks would still be slaves and women wouldn't have the vote etc....

If you put some effort in achieving something rather than finding excuses for not doing anything maybe we could all achieve good things together i.e. team work

This petition will only get a stupid response like the following....

    http://www.pm.gov.uk/output/Page14868.asp
The Government recognises that retail fuel prices have risen in recent months, as a reflection of the underlying price of crude oil. The retail price of fuel at the pump is ultimately a matter for retailers and their suppliers, and taxation is just one of a range of factors which determine the price paid by the consumer.
The role of fuel duty as a component of the retail price is kept under review by the Chancellor as part of the Budget process, as are all taxes. At Budget 2007 the Chancellor announced fuel duty rates for the next three years, in order to provide certainty for both industry and consumers, in an area which can see unexpected fluctuations from other elements. Changes in fuel duty rates have been announced through to 2009-10 and these rates were decided in line with the Government's commitment to both reduce polluting emissions, and to fund public services. They are expected to result in savings of 0.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) a year by 2010-11.
The United Kingdom, in common with all European Union (EU) Member States, also applies the standard rate of VAT to supplies of petrol and diesel fuel for road vehicles. VAT agreements that apply throughout the EU, signed by successive Governments, do not allow the United Kingdom to remove or reduce the VAT on petrol and other road fuel. However, at its current rate of 17.5 per cent, the United Kingdom has a lower standard rate than 23 out of 26 other EU countries.

The Government don't care about you so stop thinking they do. A stupid petition will do absolutely eff all. If you think it will you're in the land of make believe. *REAL* action is needed to reduce the price of petrol, like the way the French take action.

Agreed Anewman, spot on, we, the Brits think that whinging on some pathetic petition is going to make a difference, the French block roads and ports, they don't faff around.

    They get results.;)

If petitions worked, the govt wouldn't have set up a website for people to create them.

When the government set the last budget did they factor in an increase in fuel prices? I say this because their taxation income is proportional to the raw cost of fuel. Hence if fuel raw costs rise then the tax income rises to. Ergo they can reduce the taxation levels and retain the income that they originally expected.

I'd of thought they do, not just fuel but everything else to. ISTR they've got problems because they overestimated how much income tax would bring in

Higher raw costs mean more VAT, but also higher fuel costs for the goverments fleet. If I spend an extra £10 on fuel a week, I'm probably not going to HMV and buy that CD so that's less VAT. I don't know enough about economics to say where the balance point is.
