contents insurance - problem with being student

Hi,

Just to give you a bit of background info. Me and my girlfriend have been living in a private rented flat in manchester for over a month now, the flat building is six years old and is in very good condition.

We have been having a problem getting a contents insurance policy that will cover both of us on the one policy because of us both being students in full time education at university, even though we both work part time at two very well known companies. Basically every company we have tried wont insure us because of us being students or they want to offer us student insurance, but the student insurance will only cover the possessions of the person who's name it is under.

Does anyone know of any companies that will insure us under one policy that will cover the flat contents instead of the individuals contents?

Thanks, Jason

    Hi there

Try Lloyds TSB; they act as intermediary for a number of insurance companies and have policies that are designed for "non standard" cases.

The problem you have is that when insurers design standard policies, they think that all students are beer swilling wasters who are living off their parent's incomes and have no respect for their own property, let alone anyone elses. They won't admit it, but it's true. For that reason, as soon as you mention the word "student", they think you are going to get the insurance one week and lose your ipod the next, so won't let you have the standard policy.

The fact that you are working is a massive plus point. Mention the working bit before the student bit when you phone up, but make sure you tell them BOTH occupations.

Hi, thanks for this, I'm the girlfriend. Thing is can I get away being a worker as I am in uni for 21 hours a week but in work for 25 to 30 hours a week. Maybe that will help with searching a cheap insurance? Also we live in a flat so haven't got 5 bolt lock/security system in my flat(its secured entry with 2 entrace that requires special keyfob to enter) and security wise it is very good, as for patio door we live on the 4th floor with juliette balcony...I doubt anyone will climb up as it is highly impossible... just need contents cover only...any ideas please? Thanks, M

  • I live on my own and I'm a full time student, and I have no problem with buildings and contents insurance - I'm with Birmingham Midshires.

I cannot personally +/- Endsleigh but they were originally established by the NUS, and are still recommended by them ...

Must be worth a try, and i think there is an NUS card that may give you further discounts, not only for insurance

Thanks for the replies, will try Lloyd's. Don't want to go with Endsleigh cause have a car insurance policy with them and I know that their policies do not cover a lot of things as compared to some other companies. If anyone has any other companies or have been in a similar situation and have any recommendation's they would be much appreciated?

Just bacause its NUS doesn't mean it's cheap, I tried with Endsleigh but they were going to charged me £800 for contents only...while Barclays is only 470....anywhere else...thanks people!

Hi ... when I said " I cannot personally +/- Endsleigh " I was genuinely trying to avoid saying anything positive or negative about, nor recommending Endsleigh, but attempting to offer a "possible" solution that maybe you had not tried - but, lol, it looks as tho' you already knew far better than me and with respect (and I do mean with respect, ok) if you have a "don't bother telling me these - we already know" list - it would help those that are trying to help you, if you told us - save us all some time, just imho.

Found this - and stress I don't have a clue what they are like either, just trying to help.
