Xbox Help please!

I was hoping somebody here could help me out.

We have Xbox live set up and working, but it is going through the laptop, using ICS.

This means, that whenever the kids want to use Xbox live, they have to use the laptop.

My question is this; if I buy a ADSL router, can i plug that in to the xbox. Then, get a wireless adapter for the laptop, and desktop (upstairs), so they share the connection from the ADSL modem router that is plugged into the xbox.

Can anyone tell me if this would work?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

    Yes that should work
i have recently done that for a friend using the Belkin ADSL2+ Modem with High Speed Mode Wireless-G Router bought from argos
    While I breathe.... I hope
  • Yep that should work. So long as the router is Xbox live compatible.

    Check out Broadbandbuyer.
  • Thank you very very much for your help.

I'm hoping to get that argos kit as well possibly.

Is there anything I should watch out for when trying to set it up?
  • Works fine, it's what I do.

    That's good to hear.

Thank you very much for helping to put my mind at rest!

I was thinking of buying the Netgear D834G router, this should work as well shouldn't it?

Also, what equipment do you use.

    That's what I use and it's great.
  • I'm using a Linksys WAG54G and that works just how you described it.
  • That's how mine is setup too.

I just wanted so say thanks again for everyones help.

I have just received the netgear wireless modem router, and the usb adaptor.

I was wondering if somebody could recommend to me the best way to set it all up, should I set the router up through my computer first, then plug it into the Xbox, or can I set the router up through the Xbox, then just plug the adaptor into the PC, so the PC can get access to it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for your help again guys!
  • Hi!
You'll almost certainly need to set the router up with your PC plugged into it first (I strongly suspect it wouldn't work out of the box.) Then the XBox can be plugged in and you can try getting wireless going. I believe you are planning to use wireless access to connect you PC upstairs - if you possibly can try running cable upstairs as the wireless reception will not be that good - it least it's not for me.
    Regards
