i lost my wife late 2004 at the age of 22 so i was in a bit of a pickle with my life lost my wife had a full time job in the army and was left with our 5 month old son i had a ccj and two defaults early in 2005 with everything going on i did not even know that these had happened anyway i have met a great woman at the end of 2005 who i married last year and have a 1 year old daughter with as well as my son we all love each other and its now as if those bad times did not happen until i try for credit.
so my question is i paid my ccj off in full and 1 default in full just waiting for them to show as satisfied and £186 outstanding on my last default which i intend to pay at the end of the month is there any way to get a credit card with payed default and ccj as capital one refused me two days ago any help would be great
also what effect wiil paying off old outstanding defaults and ccj have on you credit file/score

The fact remains, you have a recent history of running up debts. You have not only missed payments, you have a CCJ and defaults on your credit file. This is the information potential lenders will see, if you apply for another credit card.
CCJs and defaults are on file for six years from the date registered, so your chances of getting any credit card are pretty remote at the mo. The only way your credit file (and therefore your chances of a credit card) will improve significantly is over time. You're not affected permanently, but it takes a while to build a good credit history from scratch.
If you're serious about applying for credit cards in the future, I would have a look at Martin's *Credit Rating* articles on the main site http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/credit-rating-credit-score
Hope this helps.People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0
