Electricity Supplier Being Changed Without Authorisation

Recently we received a final bill from Scottish Power which we thought strange. After a quick phone call it transpired that some other power company said they were taking over the account. We pointed out that we hadn't spoken to another power company or authorised a switch. (At this point we didn't know which company). Anyway they stated this happened quite a lot and not to worry they would sort it out.

Since then we have received a letter stating that we have been transferred to British Gas and they are still imvestigating and still not to worry as it is a mistake.

Two days later a further letter arrives stating that British Gas claim they have not acted innappropriately and the supply was not transferred in error. Scottish Power then go onto say that due to industry regulations they are unable to challenge this.

What can I do about this and can we refuse to pay? We have had no contact from British Gas at any time.

The one possible fly in the ointment is our meter is currently housed in the neighbours stables and has been like this for years (50+) when the property was all one (big house and cottage owned by my OH grandparents) we are in the cottage and the house has passed through several hands in that time.

You can't refuse to pay other than by not using any gas/electricity - you are 'deemed' to have accepted ther contract if you take a supply.

You probably CAN get away with refusing to pay more than SP would have charged you (I did when this happened to me).

You will have to request to switch back - which will take a few weeks.

Maybe your neighbours have switched supply and given the wrong meter number.

Yes it looks like this has happened. I must say though the girl I spoke to was very good and bllod pressure stayed down when I was getting ready for a big fight so credit where credit is due.
