Well I managed to solve the problem, in a slightly different way as I couldn't find the CD. For those in a similar situation, here is what I did:
Bought a 2.5 HD caddy for £10
removed the HD from the lappy
put the HD in the caddy
Plugged the caddy with the HD to another PC (via USB)
The PC assigned a new drive letter but couldn't read the contents of the HD
Went into DOS prompt and typed: "chkdsk [driveletter]: /F"
after some wait it scanned through the HD and repaired all the bad segments
after that I was able to read all files on the PC so I did a backup
and then refitted the HD back to my lappy and voila' all back to normal.
Thanks for all who helped!
Now AVG8 will have to go, I won't take any chances.., any suggestions for an alternative free AV?

thought you said you had a disk lol, anyway two options too avg are avast and avira
both free for home usersclick here to achieve nothing!0 -
Yeah, I've recently moved away from AVG. Bear in mind that the free version of avira does not include an e-mail scanner, but avast does. I've now got all three household comps running avast for that reason, and no probs to report so far

[Off topic: BTW I am hugely disappointed with AVG, as they seem to have started to use underhand marketing techniques to "fool" you into getting the paid version]
That is a bit unfair, the new AVG free version 8 is available as usual on their website hereDoublespresso wrote: »

Your problem was due to bad sectors on your hard drive, which you fixed using chkdsk, nothing to do with AVG. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
