Victorian beachwear

Yes, I know, it's that time of year when the school decides that the children need to come dressed up in VICTORIAN BEACHWEAR of all things. They've been doing a project on the seaside so I can't get away with dressing DS1 (6) as a chimney sweep.

The ONLY inspiration I have is a hankie hat with the four corners knotted, but that is probably historically incorrect ... or he can carry a deckchair into school.

BIG HELP PLEASE

  • Victorian swiming costumes seem to have been a sort of all in one garment, with shorts going to calf length and elbow length sleeves although some pictures don't have sleeves. Typically woolen material was used. Perhaps you could use rolled up trousers, shirt with sleves rolled to elbow and maybe braces. Hope this helps - I'm sure googling will give you some pictures to inspire you.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Hadn't had a lot of luck with googling; but I have settled on a navy T shirt which I am going to chop the sleeves off of, a pair of navy pjama bottoms which come to just below his knees and then I might add stripes of white to both ... and I'm off to try and make a boater of some description
    Who thinks these things up?
Makes me laugh, though, as the teachers are going to dress up too!

I don't know about Victorian, but my dad always used to use the 'hanky with knots in each corner' trick ...
