The Pc Is Rude To My Usb Device

Hi can anybody please help. I am helping my friend re-do his windows XP after it went wrong, ie we formated the hard drive and re-installed all the software. Now I have a Integral 64MB USB flashdrive (1.1), basically memory on a USB thingy, but when I plug it in the light comes on, on the integral and goes off like it should but the PC just seems to ignore it. It's a 2 year old PC by the way.
I tried all the USB ports, back and front, but they all behave the same. I am pretty sure they are connected so I have not checked, because he has had stuff on them in the past and the fact that the integral lights up.
I tried downloading drivers and found they only seem to be for Windows 95/98, so I tried these but the install program came up with, you have XP and do not need these, very clever but hasn't helped, any ideas?
I want it to work because I have some virus software and spyware programs and no access to the internet where my friends PC is at present. Help.

Just downloaded the USB2 driver on another PC and installed it on the problem PC. Installed ok but after reboot still no reaction.
The XP I am using just says 2002 so I am pretty sure it is sp1 (I think thats what you call the first one).
No internet acess on problem PC yet so I cannot upgrade it yet to sp2.

Do other USB devices show up OK ?
Some USBkeys do not make good connections with the USB socket, due to the shoulder on the key being a bit wide and not letting it go fully in, Get hold of a USB extension lead, plug that into the computer and the key into that.
Can you not make a cd with the contents of your key on?
USB 2.0 drivers are more often than not motherboard specific. Your USB1 will work in all versions 1 or 2 as 2 is backward compatible with USB1.0 -

If you head down to your local PC World store or other PC equipment outlet you can pick an SP2 disc for free.:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:0 -

Thanks guys, I'm off to try and get one of these free sp2 disks. I've never noticed them in the shops before, but I will ask for one. I will let you know what happens next.

Hi, got hold of SP2 and upgraded, plugged two different USB flash drives, but still no reaction from PC, please help.
I hope no one will say this is the reason, but obviously I have not activated my XP yet, there are 30 days to go. This, as far as I am aware from previous experience does not normally prevent the USB from working.
The USB obviously has power as my devices light up when plugged in and then go out after a few seconds just as they should.0 -
Take out the USB device restart the machine and then plug back in
if no go, you might need specific USB drivers, Unless I missed it
what are you connecting, i.e Make and model of device, what does it do
what is it, as My Phones USB connection needs a specific driver.
P.S register Windows now anyway.0 -
Tried the restart, and loaded the drivers for it I got via a download on another PC but still no go.
the device I'm trying to get going is "Integral 64MB USB flashdrive (1.1)", it's one of these memory module thingys and it works fine on other machines.0
