                    Hi.
My mum died 3 weeks ago and she had a joint will with my dad.All her assets which was only about £4000 goes to my dad.I assume that the house is then all his(they paid off the loan).
We were talking to somebody and they said asked if we have changed the names on the Land Registry over to my dad as it is was in joint names as he said if anything happened to my dad in a few years we would be hard to prove who owned what and a lot of paperwork.
My dad had a brief word with a legal chap and he was quoted £500 to do this,is there a way we can do this ourselfs for less and if so how please?
Vince.

Phone the land registry, they will send you the forms.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. When my father died, a copy of the will and death certificate were lodged with the deeds for the house. There was no need to get any names changed with the land registry as there was a provable trail to the current owner (my mother). When she died we had no problems when the house was sold. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

That 'somebody' didn't know what they were talking about. You don't have to change the registry, as long as there is a paper trail to the joint ownership i.e. as someone else has pointed out; a copy of the will and death certificate lodged with the deeds.
If you did want to tie up this loose end, then call the land regsitry that serves the area where the house is, and they will send the forms and tell you how to fill them in and how much it will cost.
There will be a fee (can't remember how much as it was a long time ago that I did this) but it will be NOWHERE near what this cheeky solicitor has quoted you, but less than £50 I think.
Don't worry too much about this...your loss is very recent and you and your Dad are more than likely feeling very vulnerable at the moment. There's no rush to do anything right now about this.0
