The Co-op credit card and the overdraft are the only things we still pay interest on....thats why I have taken on this 12 week challenge to pay the smallest off...I intend to do a similar thing with the overdraft and finish that by the end of this year...I am aiming for the beginning of December, but hope to bring that forward!!

So, I am here for the long haul....lets hope i get out of debt before I die!!!:rotfl:

Can I just agree about the VAT-free food? I have gun-dog breeds and fed them on working food until I acquired a lab with a terribly sensitive tummy. Money is not a huge issue and he is ultra-sensitive so I daren't change it - if we were in debt, I would try.

Don't forget to check ebay, ebid or amazon for anything that you have to buy in addition to selling there. And remember that things you think have no value are often wanted by someone else. I've sold the strangest items - old slide rules (not the British Thornton ones.. there are hundreds of those), vintage stockings, all sorts of ephemera to mention but a few.

    Hi Frazzmunch,

I feed mine on Wafcol Greyhound foods - British made in the North East, especially designed for greyhounds and all VAT free! They have three products in the range - Puppy (30% protein), Racing (27% protein) and Maintenance (20% protein). I would recommend the higher protein puppy til around 12 months, then racing until 18 months and then maintenance until old age!

Though I'm a big fan of Wafcol, don't worry if your local stockist doesn't have it. Just ask for a high protein VAT free food for working dogs or racing greyhounds and they'll be able to recommend a suitable one. You should certainly be able to find a really good, high protein Hill's substitute for under £15 per 15kg bag.

As I hope I made clear in my previous post, there are some stunningly good foods around now and, if I had a dog with digestive problems such as the colitis you mention or kidney disease, such general purpose foods would be unsuitable. That's when you need to hot foot it to your vet and take advantage of the vast specialist expertise of manufacturers such as Hills, Eukanuba, Pedigree Formula and so on. But for everyday mutts, who don't work like gundogs or racing hounds and don't have any speical dietary needs, I just don't get the point of paying through the nose for super premium diets.

One other point - dogs can get fussy and this puts you into a battle of wills which, if you're not careful, they will win hands down every time!!! As we used to say on our (very small) stand at Crufts to anxious owners, we've never known a dog to starve itself to death! So if your dear darling dog suddenly turns his nose up at his normal food, I would recommend either adding a little bit of tinned meat, a sprinkling of gravy granules or some good old table scraps. I will always remember one lady tellling us in no uncertain terms that our food was rubbish and her dog would not touch it. When asked what she was currently feeding, she said "Grilled chicken breasts that I've partially chewed myself!" YUK! :rotfl:

little lilly ...thanks for the info about the chicken...glad i wasn't eating at the time!!!

You'll all be pleased to know that I have taken heed of your words of wisdom and will start changing their food when they are a year old...no, I'm not woosing? (never really thought of how to spell that :rotfl: !) out or doubting anything anyone has said...its just that i already have two bags in transit to me that I have already paid for so that should see me through the next month and they are a year old on the 11th July! Ooh, that was dangerously close to almost having method in my madness!!:rotfl:

I really do want to take the opportunity to say: :D thanks to everyone who has posted on here......reading your comments and words of encouragement is honestly making a massive difference to my determination to stick to this...i have frequently been one of huge ideas and plans to get myself out of the appalling mess i am in  but have managed to put off really actioning all the plans I made...:o however, this time i honestly think i am going to make it and i have to give credit where its due....:kisses: big kisses...thank you so much!!

hi, i'm just back on after a weekend off line. I'm also in for the long haul so no doubt we'll be travelling this road together. I'm in Suffolk so only down the road from you. I don't have dogs just two cats but would really love a dascshund but can't at the moment.
I'm sure you'll find some other things in your SOA which are luxuries and which will help you achieve your totals. Go for it and you'll definately manage your challenge.
  • Hi Frazzmunch!
Best of luck with your challenge, I don't post that often myself, more of a lurker, but I'm sure you'll get loads of great ideas and advice. I noticed on your soa you are currently paying amozon dvd rental £7 a month. Have you looked into the cashback sites such as quidco, cashback kings and rpoints? They have some good deals where you sign up to free dvd rental two week trials and you get cashback for doing so. These are the deals at the moment:

blockbuster (quidco) £16 only till 6th june tho, was £7.50
    mymoviestream (quidco) £5
    cinema paradiso (quidco) £1
    lovefilm (cashbackking) £16
    also,
lovefilm 2 months for 1 (plans start at £3.99, not sure if theres a tie in period) (cashbackking) 14.50

So... if you can cancel your amazon that will save you £7 a month, and you have enough free trials to keep you going for at least 8 weeks, then you could sign up to the two for one lovefilm offer and get two months for £3.99 (although check theres no minimum contract period cos I forgot!).

total savings £28 (4 months not paying amazon), and you'll get a total of £52.50 cashback, so thats £80.50 you could put towards your debts, not minus the £3.99 you'd need to pay for the 2 for 1 offer, and you'll still get to rent dvd's!!! Just remember to cancel before the end of the free trial period. Hope this helps your challenge x
Oh, and my mum has a greyhound, best pets in the world!

    Hi Frazzmunch

If you have a look at Autarkys website they list stockists in your area, none in mine so I get it on ebay......

Like little lily says there are cheaper ones out there ( and I'm sure just as good!) but they didn't suit my rottie who has a tendancy to be a little delicate shall we say?;)

Hi frazzmunch - have a look at the old style board. You might think of starting a thread asking for cheapy cheap meal ideas and ways to cut down on other household expenses.

    Good luck.
