Hi, I can get a Dell 5100 (Pentium 3000Mhz, 1024Memory, 250Gb Hard Drive, DVD Rewriter (dual layer..), 17 value flat panel, 256Mb ATI Radeon X600, IEEE 1394 PCI Card but no soundcard) for just over £600 inc. del. Do you agree that I won't get any better ? Thanks for your help.

  • Depends on the offers that Dell have on a regular basis...ATM it maybe a good deal but tommorrow it it may not!

When buying a computer you need to look at when you want it and what you want it for rather than the price you pay. I know people who bought computers in the the late 90's for over £3000.00 (spec was cutting edge at the time)

The biggest problem is technology will alway improve and prices will always drop, that why I stated its when you want it.....you can always wait for the next drop in price, this may occur tommorrow or in a month.

Price drops, on a very general level occur roughly every 6 months. Also if you look around on sites such as https://www.sharkyextreme.com, they do price comparisons with previous months so you can get an idea of what components are holding their value and which are dropping. Keep an eye on new developments too.

If you time it right and can find a great price, you can get components that'll hold their value for longer. Memory is always a good example. Like previously mentioned though, with technology it'll always become outdated eventually. The trick is not to spend too high, as the very latest and greatest will drop in price very quickly.

For example a good value cpu at the moment is the AMD64 3500+. It's now a mid range cpu but will do most people fine.

Oh, and personally I don't think that is a great deal as you could build something much better (better quality components) for roughly the same price.

And they're due a pricing error, haven't had one in weeks..
