Sounds like you're still using BT for your telephone calls (not a good idea for most people).
Please see the HERE link in my signature below for some suggestions on how to get your call costs down.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

Difference is probably due to the fact that you are now charged for evening calls by the minute (1.5p/min plus 6p fee) instead of a flat 5.5p per call, instead your weekend calls are now free.0 -
This may not be the best place to be posting, but it was the most relevant one I could find and it seems you guys may well know something that could help. Sorry, new to posting on the forum despite using the site for years....
Ok, so here goes... About 10 months ago, we took out our BT line with the sole intention of using for Sky + and Sky BB only, the 3 of us living here all have mobiles and enough free minutes to enable us not to touch the landline for that purpose. We took this out on the understanding it would be £11 a month via DD. In addition to this, we were told the installation fee of £124 would be charged as the house hadn't previously had a line - when the engineer came, he hooked it up in minutes and told us there had been a line here before, meaning we could reclaim the connection charge.....10 months on and hours of painful, fruitless telephone calls later, nothing!
So not only have we been wrongly charged for the connection charge, they have for some unknown reason, added a call plan to our bill with no authorisation from any of the bill payers. This has been going on for far too long, and after another 90 minute call this evening, in which I thought might be getting somewhere, I ended up with the same response, we'll take a contact number and someone will call you in 5-7 working days!!!
We've been wrongly charged for the £124, and a call plan costing £10.50 a month which was never agreed when all we wanted was a line at the cost of £11.00. How hard can it be!!!
Can anyone advise what might be the best route to take with this, or if there is a source of information that might help?
Thanks guys0 -
Welcome to the MSE forums TIME2SAVE.
It hasn't been possible to get a BT line without a calls plan for a long time. Such a plan was/is part of the package and cost/costs nothing extra.
Until April 1st 2008, then minimum was the BT Together Option 1 (evening and weekend calls to UK 01/02 numbers for 4½p each for up to an hour for £11/month) but it's now the Unlimited Weekend Plan (free weekend calls to UK 01/02/03 numbers of up to 60 minutes for £11.75/month). The former could be reduced by 50p/month (to £10.50) by opting for paper-free billing and the latter can be reduced by £1.25/month (to £10.50) by opting for paper-free billing.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Thanks Heinz.
Does that mean that the call plan is charged at £10.50 on top of the £11.00 line rental and therefore it's not possible to have a line solely for another providers' broadband and tv services?
Do you have any suggestions as how I may go about reclaiming money I've been overcharged, without the hours of unsuccessful phone calls?0 -

(2). It sounds like you've paid the installation charge now so you've probably lost the chance to use the 'disputed bill' procedure (pay the amount you agree with and dispute a particular item) so I'd say complaining by letter detailing the circumstances is your best chance now.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Thanks again Heinz, you've been very helpful. Hopfully we can get somewhere with this now! I won't hold my breath though, it is BT we're talking about....0
