Hi,
I need help from techie.
I updated Windows XP Home and Internet Explorer 6 on SONY VAIO PCG-K415S PENTIUM 4 LAPTOP. I also removed Symantec with view to install McAfee.
At the end of the update, I restarted the laptop and now the laptop starts up, goes up to welcome screen and then gets stuck with message:
"Setting personalized settings ---- Internet Explorer" and does not go further.
I waited for atleast 20 minutes at this stage in case it might load the start menu, but it didn't. I tried restarting laptop couple of times, but still gets stuck at this screen.
Any suggestions how to solve this problem?

try starting windows in safe mode . you may have to go through the bios to do that. so when the laptop boots up you should be able to press escape or f11 or whatever key that it asks to enter setup before windows starts to boot.
once in safe mode - you may need to try a restore point for the last working configurationDon't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -

Thanks for your reply. Funny thing is there is no message coming up on start screen regarding which key to press to enter set-up. I will try 2 keys mentioned by you and hope I am able to get into safe mode.
I managed to open in safe mode and tried opening through last known configuration and still the same error.
I opened it again in safe mode and removed IE7 and I am now getting message of Removing personalized settings for outlook express and screen is stuck at this stage. I think couple of windows updates including outlook express were installed after updating IE7.
Any more ideas?0 -
as a final option to reload the operating system - but you could try the disk check utility in safe mode
START>RUN type in chkdsk.exe and see if that spots - fixes any disc errors.Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -

Hi, I managed to start laptop in safe mode trying various function keys you mentioned and went to Help and Support section.
I then went to system restore and restored to previous configuration and it is working ok. Thanks for your help. The problem occured while installing IE 7 as an update to IE6. So, now, I am not going to update to IE7 and using Mozilla.0
