Despite the excellent tips on getting rid of sicky smell from carpet/house...it still smells awful.
I have cleaned with stardrops, bio washing powder, astonish carpet cleaner,,,,,, sprinkled-on haze, neutradol powder,,,,,,sprayed febreeze.........and left windows open all weekend (family were freezing & kept moaning!)...also have a glade plug-in thing going full strength...
What else can I do? - it is driving us mad!
I wonder if it is cos it is a very thick pile carpet, or maybe there is underlay and it's got into that. Short of taking this up (and it was professionally fitted so I really don't want to disturb it unless I absolutely have to) I am at a loss.
Yours in smelly despair,
FE
PS - clothespegs really hurt your nose!!!!!!!!

Well it seems to me as though the stuff soaked well deep into your carpet before you ever got near it with cleaning agents. Last time I had something that bad (a dead mouse almost liquified under the bed before it started smelling - but then BOY did it stink!!) so there was a nasty pong. I didn't even bother with spraying febreeze - once I'd cleaned the surface I just took the top off the febreeze and poured it on neat making sure I covered all the affected area. Blotted off some of the excess and just left it to it. Took three days before I couldn't discern the dead mouse smell and a further week to dry.

Hmmmm I know that smell only too well
When a mouse goes uneaten and has sat in a viv for 24+ hours at around 90F degrees it does tend to pong a bit _pale_ ... so the only way to deal with it is a quick flush down the loo!!!
I dread to think what yours smelt like if it was almost liquified  ... although I can imagine somewhat as I've had a snake regurgitate a mouse 48 hours after eating, so it was partially digested, and the smell almost knocked me out"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

I can't believe how far it got into a state of decomposition without smelling pretty horrible much earlier!
At least that one only cost me about a quarter of a bottle of Febreeze - one prior to that cost me £40!!!!
Sally has now taken to eating all her prizes (I think) and all I've got to do now is to teach her not to do it while sitting on my chest at half past five in the morning! I reckon your sense of smell is way off!!!... unless mine is just very sensitive, which is highly possible, as I can tell when a snake hasn't eaten it's dinner within 24 hrs of offering it because the smell of the decomposing flesh permeates through the glass doors and reaches my nose pretty damned quick!!
Thankfully I'm free of the cats adding further to the problem at the moment, although I'm sure they'll be ecstatic once we move and can go foraging for shrews and mice once again, but they tend to bring them in alive so they can play with them before killing them
Their only thrill at chasing anything live right now is an escaped cricket or locust, or any poor spider that dares to enter our territory... don't you just hate the sound of that crunch when they chow down on an insect

I can usually pick it out quite early - like you I'm attuned to dead mice
The crunch of heads being bitten right next to me or even ON me by madam makes my ears try to close themselvesHi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Try scrubbing the carpet with your white vinegar and water mix - I have four kittens plus two adult cats at the moment and whilst there is nothing putrifying in my carpet there have been quite a few smelly deposits and I have found this works well for me. Cleans the carpet, disinfects and gets rid of the smell.
And try burning some natural oils in a burner with a tea light rather than the Glade plug-ins - much more natural smell and seems to reach over the nasty smell height !!
Good luck0
