Hi all . I have a 5 month old daughter who has spent the last 3 months in hospital after going throught 2 major heart operations. She is finally coming home tomorrow and I have been told by my health visitor that we should claim for DLA due to the fact that my daughter is still on lots of heart drugs to stop her having heart failure and also still has a feeding tube which she will need in long term. Will we be entitled to DLA and anyone have any ideas of how much we may be entitled to ?

Hi LisaK
You can download a DLA pack from http://www.dwp.gov.uk/advisers/claimforms/dla1a_child_print.pdf
Save it to your desktop and fill in a bit at time because it's a bit of a pig to fill in-they want to know the ins and outs. I know it'll be difficult but be as detailed as you can.
Good luck to you all x0 -
Thanks a lot. Have saved that to my desktop and will start filling it in .0

The hardest bit is filling in the application and giving the right answers. Not sure if you have looked anything up but this link gives examples of what things you can put on the application. http://www.childrens-heart-fed.org.uk/resources/information_&_advice/detail.cfm?contentid=140
Good luck with your claim.0 -
can only echo what has been said,it pays to do as much online research as you possibly can,get supporting letters from any medical professionals you can to submit with the application and if you have a welfare rights office in your area get help form them or the CAB
good luck and best wishes to your little girl0 -
I claimed it for my daughter when she eventually came out of hospital at 6 months. While your waiting for the form, write down everything you do for her. Even things like measuring her feeds, measuring her medicine, how long it takes you to do everything, how many appointments you have, how long it takes you to get there. Write down everything no matter how small the task as it all mounts up. Then when you have finished make sure you put the consultant who sees your daughter the most as he`ll have the best idea rather than a GP who you may only see just for repeat prescriptions. It took me 3 weeks to fill out the form, which was emotionally draining too as you just don`t realise how much you are doing for this baby that you believed would be "normal". She did get high rate care and when she was 3 she got high rate getting around too. I`ve just done the renewal last year and although they did reduce the care to low rate she still has high rate getting around. Don`t really agree with the findings but as the weather gets better she is not ill as often though she still needs her med and help with feeding. PM me if you need anymore help.0

I would be very surprised if you didn't get High Rate Care for your daughter OP, anything less for a baby with a chronic heart condition would be very unusual. Just make sure you stress the supervision she needs. x"I always pass on good advice. It is the only thing to do with it. It is never of any use to oneself" -Oscar Wilde0

Hi and and as I expect that this involves at least 2 sessions overnight (alarms on feeding tube, etc) lasting for 20 mins or more, you will get the higher rate DLA. pm me too if you like , I had a n-g feeding tube for my dd.0

i would suggest actually telephone for a claim pack - 08457123456, as they will backdate any award made to the date you rang for the form, so long as you get it back to them within 4 weeks. the online form is very good as a practice run though, as it is a very long form!!!
also, dont forget to take a copy of your form before you send it back, it helps for future claims, appeals etc.0
