i looked at this and it only offered me the option of an 0845 number, which I'd rather not have,,, was looking for a local number ideally

    Try www.orbtalk.co.uk instead.

Am in a similar situation to OP-am taking on a retail premises with no phone line.

I have just ordered a mobile with a great cashback deal that'll cover all the outgoing calls I'll need to make.

I want a local number for people to be able to call me on, but don't want to sign up to BT for a year's contract at £43 per quarter + connection fee of £106.

Will orbtalk be the solution? Is it possible to avoid having a BT line at all with a local number for customers to dial?

Orbtalk will give you a local geographic number on most UK local exchanges but to be able to answer it your need to set up voip and for this your normally need business broadband, and a phone line.Unless your in a cable area where you might get standalone broadband.

You can divert an Orbtalk Number direct to a mobile, but the call divert is relatively expensive.

Really? When I signed up about a year ago I picked a local area code. Looking at the registration page that's still the case, you just pick your local area and then you get a choice of which you want to go for, local, 0845 etc.

There are many other providers out there, but after researching it sipgate were one of the best.

That's true, it was mainly a cheap solution that I suggested should the OP'er have a good internet connection already.

Would it work on mobile broadband plugged into the laptop? £10pm (3 mobile BB) + voip costs seems far more palatable than the fortune BT want to charge.

    try http://www.localphone.com

You can get a local number and divert it to a pc / another landline or a mobile

(the landline divert costs about 9p per min, mobile costs more)

If you divert to a PC phone it's free.
    baldly going on...
