Hi,
I'm not quite sure where to post this
as this is my first attempt at entering a post. I recently downloaded an Anti virus program from Avast, I had read a lot of the feedback from satisfied customers on MSE so I thought it would be ok.
There are 2 versions one for business and a free one for home use. I downloaded home edition followed instructions, when computer restarted it automatically started to run so I left it to it, when I came back my computer had "committed :A suicide!!"
It took 3 days to get up and running again! We even went to look at a new computer (an expense  we could do without!) Fortunately for us we gave our old one, one last go at kiss of life and it is now all :j happy again!

I've been using Avast for years without issue on numerous computers. The only time I've had problems with Anti-Virus software is where Norton/Symantec is used (awful software) or it has deleted system or boot files that have become infected with a virus. This is probably what happened to you.
If you don't want to use Avast anymore you can try AVG (also free but its their old version thats free) or if you do buy one avoid Symantc/Norton. I'd recommend Trend.

its not the old version of AVG thats free, it's the new version 7...the PRO (paid for) version gives you more options thats all !!
You may have had 2 anti virus installed when you added Avast ??Ex forum ambassador

Sorry to hear that you had a problem with AVAST.
I had similar nightmare when I loaded McAfee Internet Security Suite 2005 onto my PC. McAfee used 95%-99% of my CPU all the time it was switched on. McAfee helpdesk couldn't resolve the issue, so after a month I uninstalled McAfee and installed AVAST. Everyrthing is sweet as a nut now.0 -
Oh...I forgot to mention that those miserable buggers at PCWorld wouldn't refund me the cost of the McAfee software.0
