Car insurance due before I get a new car

My car insurance is due on Monday 26th May, however I'm getting a brand new car (courtesy of generous relative) which is due to arrive mid June.
My current car is a 1.6 R reg Astra and a bit sorry for itself. My new car is super efficient, cheap tax, low band Fiat Panda 1.3 deisel.
SO, do I renew my insurance on the Astra and swap over...or do I find the best price for my new car and get my Astra insurance with them for <month. There's no chance of not being insured as I need my car to travel 30miles to work and there aren't any transport links.
Help!

Lucky you
Ring your current insurer (or use the website) to get an idea of likely prices for the Fiat when you change. Compare with other firms (use the sites like Money Supermarket, Confused etc) to see if there are better deals to be had.
Its always best to make the switch at renewal time. When you purchase insurance, you buy 1 years cover but possibly spread the cost with a credit agreement. You will find that cancelling after 1 month might cost you 1/5th (approx) of the annual cost and not the 1/12th you might have expected.
Finally, check with your current and prospective insurers what admin fees they charge for changing vehicle details. This can range from zero to £50.0
