Composting - is this a good price for a composter?

Our local authority subsidises composters if you order through them and do one for £9.95 http://www.getcomposting.com/wm/index2.htm
I want to start doing this even though we won't be doing any gardening just yet - more from a reducing waste point of view. Is this a good type of composter to get and is that a good price for one? Would it be worth/a good idea to get the composter base or aerator too?

  • I got mine through St Helens Council from Blackwall. Mine was a 330ltr compost bin similar to the one your picture shows, but I also received a kitchen caddy bin and some biodegradable bin liners too all for £10 delivered. Check your council first.

I got one through my local authority too. It was £5 and holds 300ltr which was massive and plenty big enough for us. It was from a company called Blackwall in Leeds (although I live in cornwall)I rang 0845 073 2002 to order it but they may have a special contract with certain councils. I've only had it for a month but love it!
  • I also got one from our council for £5.00. We were sent a flyer about a special sales day when they sold them so it may be an offer they had.

  • I got one from Blackwall too, via a local council and it was £5. I had to have it delivered to my friend as I dont live in the right area, but its great.
We have got our rubbish down to one black bag per week from 3 by composting, and recycling glass, tins and paper/card.

Most councils have occassional promotional periods when you can get then very cheaply - Sheffield Council was recently giving them away for free. Saying that £10 isn't outrageous.

£10 is a good price. Our local B&Q have them for £39! That is not including delivery. Our council is doing them for about £9 with delivery and I have seen them in Lidl packed flat for £13.
  • Think I might just get one, not sure how I'll hide it from my husband though - he won't be happy as he thinks I'm mad to want to compost stuff!

My kids think it's disgusting and I have to argue with them not to put banana skins, egg shells etc in the bin. Sometimes I find my self rooting through to retrieve it. I've put mine right up at the top of the garden hidden behind hedges but it's not really in a sunny spot as they recommend so it will take months to work i expect. I keep an old lidded plastic container outside the back door and when it's full trek up the garden with it.

Yes, why wouldnt you want to?

I'm not heavily into gardening, but I mainly compost to reduce the amount of waste that goes into the wheelie bin. Our local council will not take anything in addition to the contents of the wheelie bin, so I have to recycle things or our bin would be overflowing every week.
