I think I will lay mine smooth side up too.
I have seen no explanations as to why people opt to lay hardboard rough/smooth side up....but I just feel that rough side down will shape better on any uneven floorboards etc.
I would think that the rough side of the hardboards may wear the soft texture of vinyl if it was faced up…I may be wrong.0 -
Why is it better to nail not screw? Would screwing tend to pull the board down more local to the screw head whereas nailing might not?0

Nail or screw
Always used the small copper pins
1) rust free
2) easily 'banged' beneath surface
3) heads are very small...... wouldn't screw heads be far more visible ( and therefore
'show ' thru the vinyl ?
4) cheap0 -

You could screw them, but it makes it a longer job especially if its a large area...and I don’t know if there are any benefits to screwing in 3mm hardboard...and if you screw some in too much, you may get little humps.
If you are going for the thicker plywood, screws are probably best.0
