Can I use NTL box for FreeView if I cancel NTL Contract ?

I had the box left tho it was supposed to be connected - eventually rang ntl who said no note on account about outstanding box so I could keep it. Get most free channels but no E4 and as Big Brother was on at the time had to get a freeview box for the wife...I think....0

I've only done it once when our box broke for a while and we needed a signal.
