student loan repayment when abroad

Hi everyone.
My husband and I moved away from the UK 18 months ago. Both of us leaving debt behind in the UK, that we continued to pay off. I'm trying to work out the best way of going about this.
Of most concern is my husband's student loan. It stands at about 9000 pounds right now (thanks to SLC charging over 300£ in interest yearly!), and when he gets his promotion in September he will be over the threshold for deferrement.
I don't understand why the deferrement is calculated on gross income, but I guess we will just have to live with that: income tax + social security here is about double what it is in the UK, meaning that our take-home pay is considerably lower for the equivalent salary in England...
Anyway, minor rant aside, how do we make these contribuitons to SLC? Does it have to be paid monthly? We will be clobbered with bank fees every time we make a payment. How do we get around this?

you need to talk to SLC as
a) sounds like its an old style (and I bet there are old styles and old old styles too) loan because of the deferment
b) each country has different living wages and the SLC places them in bands, the threshold will be different for different bands
The monthly question, i think you again need to talk to SLC as they may be-able to set up an arrangement for you0
