General Camcorder / Recording Question

I am just interested in people's view on what they do with their tape recordings long term. Do you tend to leave the recordings on tape, mark them up and buy new tapes, or download them onto your PC and re-use the tapes, or what?
The reason I ask is because I've now got four tapes of recordings that I really wouldn't like to loose, but wold prefer not to keep buying new tapes. When I download the recordings I can either store them in DV format (which equates to 174Mb per minute of recording or normal PC format which equates to 3Mb per minute). Obviously the vast difference in storage size equates to the quality saved, but what to do. I could quite happily save all my recordings on my PC if I choose 3Mb per minute but what would I loose if I then wanted to re-edit / master that footage.
Obviously for back-ups I could use a DVD writer.
Comments / views gratefully appreciated.
