Free wireless / VOIP routers

irrelevant

Just had this in an email from a site I've bought from in the past. (And their customer service was great too; replaced a power supply without question when it died some time later!)
Free routers! Just pay P&P. (£9 on the one I just bought. Next Day would have been £13. Still a bargain if you need one of these.)
Handy if you're stuck with a USB modem and want to go wireless! They have two wireless and one wired-only but with VOIP ports at the moment. "While stocks last" of course..

It might be worth just mentioning that these units from DigiDave are refurbished. Absolutely nothing wrong with that and I've had 3 wireless routers from them which have all worked perfectly.
But it DOES affect the warranty, e.g. on the Thomson Speedtouch under Warranty, it says "No Warranty".*Please note this is a refurbished unit. It has has been refurbished by the manufacturer so it's in perfect working order. In general terms, refurbished could also be referred to as remarketed, equivalent to new, or remanufactured.
The name "refurbished" is something of a misnomer. Typically, they're products returned to the manufacturer by customers, for any number of reasons (see below), and then tested at the factory to make sure they're in tip-top shape. Defective or damaged parts will be replaced. Apple, Netgear, D-Link, HP, in fact all of the top manufacturers all refurbish items and then resell them but for much cheaper! Also, all refurbished items that Digidave sell come with warranty.
An item being classed as "refurbished" does not mean it's second hand or used!
Refurbished products can originate from a variety of sources, including:
Customer returns and cancelled orders – Fully-functional products that leave the manufacturers warehouse and therefore can no longer be sold as new.
Items where the box or casing was damaged in shipment which are returned to the manufacturer.
The item was returned to the manufacturer because of a slight defect. The part that was defective was replaced by the manufacturer, tested and then repackaged just like new.
Demonstration and trial equipment – Products have been provided to customers for demonstration purposes.
Factory or reseller overstocks – Items that are returned by the seller to make room for newer product lines.
Factory loaner equipment – Products that have been used for purposes such as trade shows, customer events, or solution centers and have been returned to the manufactuer.
Trade-in programs – Products customers have returned to the manufacturer in order to upgrade to new technology.
It is impossible to know the history of each item, but for whatever reason the unit gets labeled factory refurbished it is inspected & serviced by the manufacturer then tested and repackaged to meet original product specifications.0 -
Hi All
(Sorry guys, just realised already posted, and can't find the delete button!)
Just received this mail offering a free router (refurbished).

I don't need one, and it's one per customer.
I bought a full price one from this firm last year; had excellent service from them too.
Hope it helps someone!

If you are buying the 2Wire 1701HG Wireless Router
Cheaper on ebay:
http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=2Wire+1701HG+Wireless+Router+
the other two are about £20 on ebay, i would go for the Thomson SpeedTouch 716
as it has VOIP!0 -
look out for 780WLs on eBay, I picked one up for £8 a few days ago, slightly better than the 716 but only just.
to be honest, if you're desperate for a voip router, just get an early version of the BT home hub (1.0, the one with squarer corners). it's actually a speedtouch 7G with functionality very similar to the 716, and the voip part can be unlocked and used with anyone. the rest is a bit tricky, but this'll help: http://homehubhacks.co.uk/index.php?n=HowTo.Index
best bit is as there's so many around they're cheap as chips. got one for £10 last year so they've gotta be cheaper now.0 -
Well I thought it was a good deal .. lol...
But £9 is OK for me for a router - I only grabbed one for the VOIP ports. (I hope the speedtouch will talk to a server via the LAN.. !) Good tip on the home hubs, though. I'll have to keep my eyes open for one of those.
TBH, I'd rather spend a couple of quid extra to get from a company I know than an anonymous eBay seller and all the risks that involves.

>> I hope the speedtouch will talk to a server via the LAN.. !
you mean because of nat? I only realised that while setting mine up, thought it might not even be worth the hastle, but amazingly it worked fine. i don't know if it's because of the router (homehub / speedtouch 7G) or my WRT54G it was connected to (the dd-wrt firmware i have on it apparently has a "sip aware firewall" though that may only apply to later releases so i'm not sure if it's on mine). anyway, like i say it just worked. so with a speedtouch connected through anything using dd-wrt firmware should be fine. oh and try the trick i did with the homehub if you want pstn and voip through the same phone, *and* still use a different router as your main one: http://homehubhacks.co.uk/index.php?n=HowTo.Bridge
and dunno if it's a v5 or not but these might come in handy:

Does anyone recommend a particular model for use as a bridge ( I think that's the right term
)?
I'm looking to connect a Slingbox via ethernet, to a router acting as a bridge. The bridge connects to my main router wirelessly. Tried with one of my existing routers but it doesn't support this function0 -
I bought a " refurbished " router from Digidave, it didn't work, nor did the additional 2 replacements that he sent me, I gave up in the end.
They certainly hadn't been " refurbished " they were just second hand.:mad:0
