I love the idea of a glove jelly - but how do you 'set' it? Do you have to peg it to the fridge shelf or is there a better way?

    I'm interested too - anyone?

I did a fancy dress haloween party last year and got some good food ideas from the bbc website and from nigella's website too. I started a thread about the party http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=92936 which I think has some recipe ideas and some other decorating, costume ideas etc.

I think I am being roped into hosting one again this year, but having just started a new uni course and job I am not looking forward to the clear up!
  • There are quite a few ideas on www.gooseberrypatch.com but I have to say that I am not into the "gorey" food at all!!!

My godmother (in america) is a queen at these kinds of things. These are a couple of hers:

    Eyeball potion
    8 ounces vanilla icecream
    Blueberries or raisins
    12floz boiling water
1 large pkg gelatin, any red flavour
    8floz cold water
    ice cubes

Using a small ice-cream scoop, place two scoops of ice cream into each of 10 dessert dishes for "eyeballs". Place a blueberry or raisin in each scoop for the "pupil'. Freeze 30 minutes, or until firm.
Meanwhile, stir boiling water into gelatin in large bowl at least two minutes until completely dissolved. Mix cold water and ice cubes.
Add to gelatin to make 1 pint total stirring until slightly thickened. Remove any remaining ice. When completely cold, pour about 4floz gelatin around the two "eyeballs" in each dish, leaving the top of the "eyeballs" exposed.
Refrigerate 1 1/2 hours, or until firm.

    Frightening fingers
    1/2 lb butter (no substitutes)
    5oz icing sugar (confectioners' sugar)
    1 egg
    1tsp vanilla extract
    1tsp almond extract
    1tsp baking powder
2 and three quarters cups flour
    1tsp salt
    red decorating gel
roughly 2oz sliced almonds (they must be reasonably whole though a ragged edge is OK.)

Preheat the oven to 325F. In a mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Beat in the egg and extracts. Combine flour, baking powder and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture. Divide dough into fourths. Cover and refrigerate for 5-30 minutes or until easy to handle.
Working with one piece of dough at a time, roll into 1inch balls. Shape the balls into 3inch by 1/2 inch fingers. Using the flat tip of a table knife, make an indentation on one end of each for the fingernail. With a knife, make three slashes in the middle of each finger for a knuckle.
Place 2 inches apart on lightly greased baking sheets. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool for 3 minutes. Squeeze a small amount of red gel on the nail bed; press a sliced almond over the gel for the nail, allowing the gel to ooze around the nail. Remove to wire racks to cool.
    Yield: About 4 dozen cookies.

If you have a small cauldron, the fingers look really frightening arranged, nail up, in it.

I had a Halloween party in leiu (sp?) of a birthday party when I was a kid. We had bourbon fingers iced to look like witches fingers, maybe with flaked almonds for a nail, I don't remember. A really cool thing I do remember though: My mum made red and green jelly and put the chopped red jelly in a big bowl with the chopped green jelly layered on top and we said a magic spell as she stirred so the red came to the top and the jelly "magically" changed colour!

The October Good Food magazine has a halloween food section. Here are some of the suggestions:

Witches Brew - a pea & bacon soup
Wizards Hat pasties - essentially triangle shaped samosas
Eyeballs - doughballs with a black olive in the top

I think a creative imagination with food names & table/room decoration will impress 5 year olds more than the food!

We make our own ghost toffee apples - just make a caramel solution (equal parts sugar and water, then bring to boil and reduce by half) Dip in apples. allow a few minutes to 'set' then repeat. The sugar solution dries to a cloudy white, and then you can use food colouring to paint on scary ghostly faces! I LOVED them as a kid!Hope that helps.xxx
