Problem with eBay transaction

I purchased a ps3 for £310 last week and the seller requested to pay cash into his account, so he gave me his details and his mobile number (Had these kind of transactions before)

He text me on the 13th May saying he had received the payment but as I was away from my flat I told him not to send it until I got back to my flat on the 17th. He said thats fine but he's had a problem with family so he couldnt send the item for a few days, He text me last night to tell that a courier is picking it up on 23rd. However, yesterday ebay have suspended his account and removed my listing. The seller has been registered for a while and has had about 85% positive feedback.

I am concerned now that eBay have removed the listing he has no obligation to send the console and I am £310 out of pocket.

Any suggestions what I should do if the seller doesn't send the item?

Oh no. Paying cash into a stranger's account is such a risky business, especially on ebay.

You need to find some solid address details, a landline phone number, a real name, anything you can get, and be ready to take it to the police.

Try to get a tracking number out of the seller, assuming he's still answering his mobile.

I hope this tuns out ok for you, but there are an awful lot of warning signs.

I hate to tell you that as you paid cash into his account you - to the best of my knowledge - don't have a fantastic chance as there seems to be no real comeback if it does go all wrong. :(

I'm sorry to say that and someone with much better knowledge than I have will be along soon and be able to maybe tell you some more.

  • Cheers guys,

We'll have to see, I still have his bank account details and i've got a receipt from the bank confirming money was paid in, whether that is relevant or not.

I'll do some 'investigating' work to try and find his address details.

And people wonder why Paypal has been made compulsory in many high risk categories....?

Knowing the bank account info may seem to be a strong lead, but only the police can force the bank to reveal the personal details of the owner of the account.

    Good luck :)

It sounds as though he was fully intending to send the PS3, so I wouldn't panic just yet.

I also had my eBay account temporarily suspended the other day, not entirely sure why to be honest.

I had 3 negatives in the last 12 months, and 250 ish positives, 98.7% feedback. Because my feedback had deteriorated in the last 3 months they have suspended the account for 4 weeks and I have to get rid of the negatives somehow!

BTW I got negatives after having gall bladder op and not being able to reply to questions about apparent lost items..

Anyway, my point is, if his feedback is 85% then this could be another one of eBays buyers/sellers that have been suspended without warning because of past performance.

A tend to agree with G_G however he might have been stringing you along. So don't do anything too hasty yet. Try and get contact details etc and then pray it arrives early next week.

From trawling through his feedback and other transactions he seems very genuine,

As your example shows it could be an unfortunate incident that has led to a few negative feedbacks.

Part of my frustration is at eBay for cancelling mid-transaction when the seller had acknowledged my payment.

As you said not to panic yet, i'll start getting a little bit worried if he's not text me tomorrow to say he's sent the items. *breathes into paper bag*

It's unnerving when they do that, but pretty standard. It doesn't affect you other than to worry you.

85% positive feedback..have I read that correctly? That's definitely 'not with a bargepole' feedback level. What are the negs for, has he sold high end goods previously, have the auctions changed between what was being sold and the payment methods and this single auction.

I'm worried here about a hijacked account as then there will b enothing to track him down and he will be long gone with the money and of course there is no ebay protection at all.

Also, this thread rings a bell, didn't we have another thread a week or two ago with a similar scenario of a console and a bank transfer where the seller did a runner?

Also why the bank transfer and not paypal, consoles are in one of the categories where paypal is required as an option..so OP did you ask to use a bank transfer or did seller request it?
