i have seen these on various shows and articles in magazines and what not, but when i do searches for them online i am stumped! i live in london and am keen to investigate the possibilities of either buying a ready-made container house, or if i should buy some land then 'build' my own. does anyone have any knowledge of any of this?

http://www.containercity.com/ has details of their developments. They used to have details of containers for sale/rent (and they were nice and cheap!) however, I can't find that now.
On the Contact Us page, there is the option to contact them if you are interested in buying or renting.
Please let us know if you find anything out!0 -

felixstowe ???It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0 -
the hard bit is where do you put one, without the planning regs it would be like 7-10k an acre but you are looking 100k+ in scummy bits of glasgow for a plot to build on, bit in a kick in the !!!! as you can build a 4 bed detached house for under 80k.0

There was a TV program on last night that used three of these in a University Car Park to create a home for the students.
I thought it was a novel idea actually.
What exactly is the situation with siting one of these on land, it is technically still a portable building, so do you require the same planning permission as house construction?0 -
Yep you'll need planning permission as it's a material change of use of the land on which the container will be stationed.0

i lived in an upstairs container on durban harbour for about 6 weeks last year, six of us sharing, it was only a half container 20", lol. had aircon tho so wasnt all bad, my downstairs neighbours were a couple of lads from the lebanon and some arab lads.
4 containers side by side, accomodation then kitchen, then laundry, with another accomodation, upstairs had accomodation again then a double lounge. nice balcony to sit out on and watch the dolphins etc.0 -
containers are easily bought, i know they used to be listed in the the plant and machinery section of autotrader, depending on the grade, you can pick them up for 300-1000 quid a piece, if you got 8 fory footers 4 side by side and went the same on top you would have about 40ftx40ft on 2 floors cut a few holes for windows etc and you would have a cheap house in no time, if it was easy as find a plot site the containers i would have no problem living like that, slap a few anodes on and it would last forever. lol0
