Global warming and "convenience"

Have we not been through this a dozen times already? Oh well, here goes :rolleyes:Your memory deceives you, Moonraker.
In that case mine does too, because I distinctly remember being taught that there was an ice age coming. I'm pretty sure it was so widely believed that hollywood even made a film about it.The pace of global warming is faster rate than ever before.
No it isn't.The international scientific community agrees that the principal cause is carbon dioxide
No it doesn't, some do some don't.
It has become fashionable in some sections of the media to portray the scientific evidence about climate change (and the impact of greenhouse gas emissions from human activities) as an exaggeration, [/quote]
It has also become very profitable for scientists to make claims about global warming. Many of them are making a very good living from telling us we are destroying the planet.but the overwhelming majority of scientists agree on the main points, even if there is disagreement on some of the details.
The overwhelming majority don't, it's just the ones who are getting paid to shout the loudest.
Even the ones who do shout the loudest are pushing us from "Global Warming" to "Climate Change". Therefore putting themselves in a win win situation. If it gets hotter or cooler, wetter or dryer, stormy or calm they can claim to be right because the climate changed. One thing is certain. The longer we delay, the more serious the situation will become.
Then again, it may be that we humans are not powerful enough to change the climate.0 -
I don't intend getting into a long argument about this, because it really is a case of beating one's head against a brick wall with the "Man Made Global Warming Zealots" - they are right, the disbelievers are heretics !
But I am afraid your response is the usual mixture of untruths, half truths and multiple repeats in the belief that if you say it often enough people will think it is true.Your memory deceives you, Moonraker.
Far from it ! Do a bit of research instead of just blindly following the "party" line.
All through the 60s and 70s Cesare Emiliani, one of the leading prophets of doom was predicting a new glaciation within a thousand years
The pace of global warming is faster rate than ever before. That's the difference
Oh really ! the Earth has not warmed at all since 2000The causes of global warming were once conjecture, but not now. The international scientific community agrees that the principal cause is carbon dioxide - rising emissions into the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels for electricity generation, transport particularly aviation, manufacturing, industry, heating and air conditioning.

Which doom-laden Green website was this load of tosh copied from ?0 -
Blimey, are you quite sure there's nothing else you wanted to pick up on, whilst you're at it?
This is the Green and Ethical board folks. Why come here if you don't want to read Green views?People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0 -

Global Warming isn't worth arguing about, well in the sense that both sides are not going to budge it isn't. Some people believe it is real and man made and some don't. Neither side will be persuaded to join the other camp.
Personally I think green issues and global warming are two different things. You don't have to believe in global warming to think that it is not good to bury all the rubbish that we do. You can believe in recycling without having to believe in global warming. You can reduce your energy consumption without global warming being the reason (I do it to save money).0 -

So is your definition of 'Green and Ethical' so narrow that it only encompasses Global Warming caused by man made carbon emissions?
Are not people allowed to disagree with your "Green views"?0 -

Did I say that? It's GJ who apparently thinks global warming and green issues are two different things.
Well, to my mind, global warming is a GREEN issue. This, the population explosion, rising emissions into the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels and our inability even to manage our own waste, are all inextricably linked.
Someone said the thing that will destroy this planet is too many people. Well, this could certainly destroy the human race (by starvation). What troubles me is that we seem hell-bent on destroying this beautiful planet of ours as well.
Anyone, with a couple of brain cells that occasionally collide, must realise the problem we need to address urgently (whether or not we accept humanity's contribution to global warming), is the profligate use of finite resources. As Quasar put itOil and all the other goodies will not materialise in ever greater quantities just because we want more of themPeople who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0 -
Why do I get dragged into these threads!Well, to my mind, global warming is a GREEN issue.
But green issues are not necessarily global warming issues. You can reduce the amount of oil you use for other reasons, not just because you think the planet is going to be destroyed by man made global warming.Someone said the thing that will destroy this planet is too many people.
Which nutter said that? A population explosion WILL NOT destroy the planet. The planet has survived a collision with it's sister planet, countless ice ages and extremely hot periods.
The planet was here long before humans, and will be here a long time after we have gone. If anyone thinks we can destroy this planet they are wrong.Anyone, with a couple of brain cells that occasionally collide, must realise the problem we need to address urgently (whether or not we accept humanity's contribution to global warming), is the profligate use of finite resources.
Yes, I agree with that, but if the phrase "global warming" had never been mentioned it would still be true that we can't go on relying on resources that are finite.
Man made Global Warming and relying on finite resources are two different things. One may or may not be real, the fact that one day the oil and coal will run out is truth.0 -

So who said otherwise?
On what grounds do you accuse those who do not share your views on 'global warming' of being profligate with the earth's resources?
I don't think anyone would disagree it makes sense to husband our finite resources.
However as you indicate, some people do not accept that the emissions they produce are the cause of climate change.
In fact there is very good reason to think that the Global Warming theory is stressed to achieve that laudable aim of reducing consumption, and enable the Government to increase their Tax revenue. The decision to retrospectively raise VED on cars built post 2001 being a good example.0 -

Well, it's taken the Green lobby nearly 30 years to convince government it should take global warming and climate change seriously. (Until former Chief Government Scientist, Dr David King, spoke out in early 2005, Blair was still firmly in denial). So, if you're right about the underlying motives, they've been a heck of a long while getting round to it!
Still, I wouldn't be surprised if it's true of some in government. It's what politicians do, isn't it?People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0
