Reclaim Income Tax paid in New Zealand?

I have been working on a Working holiday visa in New Zealand and was led to believe, by an ex tax office employee, that I could reclaim the income tax paid on departure from the country. However I have now been told that this is only possible for people who are students over here. The NZ system is very complicated, has anyone had experience of this?

hey katy, i've just returned from travels myself and worked in Nz for a while. u should be able to claim all your tax back depending on what you earned. being a student is irrelevant as far as i know. you'll need forms.. IR50, IR3 and IR886 downloadable from www.ird.govt.nz/
a fair bit of form filling in (its my job for tomorrow), you'll need to know exactly how much tax you paid, ask your employers for a statement of earning if unsure.
hope that helps
What's it going to be, eh?0
