3 weeks - but it was a 'road trip'!! Thoroughly enjoyed Memphis (Elvis), Natchez (historic buildings!), Keys (Dolphin swim), Orlando (obvious), Kenedy (rockets) Atlanta (CNN and Coke museum).
You could always do the 'top half' if on a lesser time budget:j0 -

Belnahua, Yes ive been looking in to doing this trip, SLC, Jackson Hole, YNP,
Grand Teton NP, Montana but not sure about what time of year to go. Would give LV, GC, Hoover Dam a miss as weve done them, infact we drove straight through LV last year to get to Death Valley as weve done it twice allready. May could still have snow, September could be getting cold. and would still really like the last few days on the beach. However could still be a possibility. Do you know if you can fly straight to SLC?
We went at the end of September, and Yellowstone and Tetons were quite cool, a bit of a shock to go from mid 90's in LV to 27 in Jackson one morning, but soon warmed up!
AFAIK, a few years back you could fly straight into SLC. Can't see why that's changed, as it was popular.
Recommended for SLC - Squatters Bar and Pub, and stayed at The Peery hotel, old fashioned but beats motels hands down.
Jackson Hole - Snake River Brew Pub
Moab - The Moab Brewery
They all do great food, wonderful friendly atmosphere, and great beers brewed on site. All the locals are welcoming and always willing to join in to conversation if you feel chatty!
Moab hotels always seemed booked out well in advance, so best watch for any special events as the rates sky rocket and getting a room can be quite a task! But worth it!A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.0 -

Was also thinking of this trip. Vancouver, Kamloops, Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff, Calgary. or maybe the other way round so we can have a few days on Vancouver Island. Also maybe do the Rocky Mountaineer or the Whistler Mountaineer, Infact i was having a look at a few videos on youtube yesterday the sceinery is fantastic but gosh those train's are noisey.
We did this trip last June. We flew into Vancouver, stayed for a few days (it's a dump IMHO)-Drove to Seattle for a day- then drove to Jasper via Kamploops (overnight stop) Stayed at Jasper for a few days and did the Rockies.
Drove to Calagary via Banff and dropped the car off (NO One way fees with Airline network between Vancouver and Calgary)
Flew to Montreal (stopover for a few days) then back to blighty.
Flew to Denver, picked up hire car, drove to Rapid city (400 miles....)are you visiting Mount Rushmore? Have a great time, post back your views when you get back.
Used this as a base to see Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial , Devils Tower ,(Third Encounters film) and surrounds.
Drove back to Denver-Flew to Hawaii

"Crossy, We were also thinking of this trip, What was your deciding factor on flying into Denver over Salt Lake City? Are you staying in YNP? are you visiting Mount Rushmore? Have a great time, post back your views when you get back."
We have done the LV and Canyons trip and an American said that if we enjoyed road trip then we would love Colorada in the Spring/Summer. We also wanted to go to to Yellowstone so decided to do a round road trip from Denver. I should also add that we wanted to fly direct somewhere, and BA seem to be the only airline that does - don't know of any airline that flys direct to SLC
We worked with this link www.yellowstonepark.com/PlanYourTrip/Map.aspx
to work out a route. I would have loved to visit Mt Rushmore, but we won't have time - but I will next time.
We will be staying 2 nights in the Grand Tetons and 2 nights in Yellowstone (old faithfully cabins). The rest of the time of have prebooked one night stays, mainly in B & Bs - particulaly like these although they are not cheap, you get a chance to meet real americans.
Hope you enjoy whatever you choose:D0 -
Thankyou all for your ideas:D
Ive spent hours this week looking at different itinerarys, and i think the one that gets us most excited is the Yellowstone NP followed closley by The Deep south.(still open to more ideas though)
I know what you mean about direct flights, it puts us off thinking we'll have to connect somewhere. Would really like to fly into SLC as i read its a better drive to YNP from there, but Denver's ok too.
This time of year should be good for seeing wildlife and their young, How exciting:j Have a great time & safe travelsMy mind tends to wander............If found please return;)

How about Las Vegas - Salt Lake City, Utah (Mormon Temples, Antelope Island) - Jackson, Wyoming (Yellowstone Park + Old Faithful) - Moab (Canyon Lands and Arches National Park) - Flagstaff (Grand Canyon, Lowell Observatory and Petrified Forest) and then back to Las Vegas, via the Hoover Dam and Route 66 through Kingman?
Also not forgetting that a lot of these places have micro breweries too!
Took us just over 2 weeks.
Very keen to know the 'must sees' of your trip and in particular the best micro breweries. I am doing this exact same route in August on a Harley.

Has anyone done The South, Atlanta, Smoky Mountains, Savannah, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Cape Fear.
Its such a Big Big country, and i think once you've done a road trip and enjoyed it your hooked, i know we are:D
Like yourselves we love doing an American roadtrip:T
We have drove from Washington to Florida all down the coast stopping at all of the places you have mentioned and more:D
If you do this trip make sure you also do the outer banks and Colonial Williamsburg, the latter being one of the best places we have ever been to in the USA.
Next year we are thinking of driving from San Deigo to Orlando around the Gulf;)0
