cost of private prescriptions?

do pharmacies charge the same amount for dispensing private prescriptions?

My GP has suggested prividing a private Px for co-proxamol if I don't found the alternatives helpful, thus far it's not been good.

she said it would cost about £20. :(
thanks

Hi. The cost of a private prescription depends on the trade cost of the drug dispensed. So the cost can vary between pharmacies. It's worth ringing your local ones to ask the cost - and don't assume the 'big names' will be cheapest-it isn't always the case.Co-proxamol have gone up considerably since they lost their product licence -but I don't know the cost of them.Your GP can still write an NHS prescription for them-but it depends on their policy about 'off licence' drugs.

Is it too strong a dose to simply purchase over the counter?

Have you tried different chemists, dad uses co-proxamol and he doesn't get on with the alternatives.
I'm sure he's managed to get them from the chemist in Superdrug, I'll ask mumm when I see her tomorrow.

Sincerely hope not as Co proxamol is not licensed to be sold OTC and can only be prescribed on a "named patient" basis

thanks Digger3, I will phone around for prices.

as the above posters so, co-proxamol is no longer licensed for general prescription by GPs, only on named basis. My local practice are offering patients who don't get on with alternatives the option of having private prescription, although there is the option for GPs to still prescribe individual patients with it according to new rules, However it doesn't look like many GPs are doing this.

£20 or so for what can be a fortnight's supply of painkillers will sting financially, it's beyond my means.

I don't understand why the GP wouldn't prescribe it on NHS though - issuing a private prescription doesn't reduce their liability. My local GPs issue NHS prescriptions for co-proxamol and other unlicensed drugs.

If your GP is saying that they won't issue you with an NHS prescription for co-proxamol, when it has been deemed clinically appropriate, then I would be contacting the PCT to complain because there is no reason for them not to issue an NHS prescription.

On to cost - and I do wish GPs wouldn't comment on things they don't know about. The drug tariff price of co-proxamol is £21.38 per 100 (they used to be considerably cheaper, but there is now only one supplier in the UK). However, the cost for a private prescription depends on how much the pharmacy has paid for them, what their markup is, and if they decide to add on an admin charge (because it's unlicensed we need to keep even more records than normal). The company I work for managed to secure to fairly large quantity of co-proxamol before the licence was withdrawn, so we paid significantly under drug tariff price, and we only add a 20% markup on - other groups add 50%. So basically, shop around.

The company I work for would charge £33.07 for a private prescription of 100 co-proxamol tablets.
