Vegetable Oil combined with diesel?

You have to make biodiesel ie remove the thick soap making part of the oil, and HMCE may inspect your premises to see how you do this. From my trawling of forums it seems that HMCE departments are not consistent in their application of the law. Simply mixing veg oil with derv probably wont be sufficient for them, although I suspect a heated veg oil kit will do the trick. I am not 100% sure of my facts here so dont flame me if I am talking out of my backside!
Yes, I was talking about running on straight veg oil with the conversion, the duty payments are straightforward - however, if you were making biodiesel yourself, I agree it may be more of a problem.
The biodiesel route just looks like more work to me... and despite EU rulings that diesel cars should be able to run on biodiesel if they were manufactured after 1996, you still have to be careful if you have a Lucas/CAV pump.0 -
Hi.
A friend of mine works for HMCE...
In the NW there are 3 foad fuel testing units that patrol the roads everyday checking trucks/vans AND CARS for the following:
1) Red diesel - tested by either dipping the tank & inspecting the colour & by testing for the chemical that is added to red deisel. This double detection is used because you can filter out the red dye out using fullers earth, you CAN'T remove the chemical. (If you are caught with red deisel in your vehicle then get ready for a really bad time starting with confiscation of the vehicle followed by big fines & maybe some time inside).
2) "Other fuels" - basically vegitable oils, kerosine etc either mixed with regular diesel or used on there own. They do this by analysing the exhaust gasses using (very expensive & sensitive) gas monitering equipment by sticking a pipe up your exhaust & reading a display. Regular diesel gives a particular set of readings (within certain limits), veg oil or kerosine shows up as a different set of results. Again, get caught with kerosine in your tank.... Veg oil is different but only if you can prove you are registered with HMCE & are going to or have paid the duty (You'll probably still have your vehicle impounded until you can prove everything, oh, HMCE also charge you for the tow & storage while you sort everything out!!!)
By all means try & screw the system, but be prepared for a whole world of pain if you get caught.

I would think it would be very unlikely that your vehicle would be impounded. If you are paying the correct road duty on your veg oil, you will have already registered with HMCE and will have a supplier number which they can check instantly.
Fill in the EX103 form declaring the purpose of your business as a private individual using vegetable oil as a motor vehicle fuel, HMCE will know then that you are not a fuel producer, but an end user.
I would always recommend keeping copies of the supporting HMCE registration documents in the car to avoid any problems.0 -
Hi ... follow this link - some interesting thoughts ...

Oh dear, I can't believe that people are still saying that you're going to be arrested and have your car impounded! There is NO need to register with HMRC (customs) - this has been the subject of various recent threads - try a search of this forum, and also see here
http://www.dieselveg.com/
and various other sites.
As long as you produce (for which you can read "use") less that 2500 litres per year, there is no duty. It is certainly not illegal (using red diesel certainly is!) and you will not be arrested at the roadside.
I was using a 50% mix throughout "summer" (!) this year, but now that the temperatures are dropping I'll probably use no more than 10-15%.0 -
Dude, the thread is from 2005,
