New PCI Sound Card, PC critical failure

Hi,
After checking with a few people on here, I bought a cheap 5.1 sound card via ebay.
I put it in a free port in my dell 3000, and then put in the install disc. The sound was working fine, but suddenly came up with a critical error when playing an MP3.
The screen went blue, and it mentioned something about checking BIOS if it happened again, and that it was probably to do with new hardware etc.

Any ideas please as to check what the problem was, and how I can stop it reoccuring??

Does the Dell have onboard sound? it maybe that you have both working at the same time which is causing a conflict. If your system does have onboard sound, go into the BIOS and disable it. that should solve the problem..........

If it doesn't have onboard sound try and post a little more info on what the error message was

I had a feeling that you had to do something like that from having read something somewhere before.
I will have a go at it when I get back from work
