Getting cold feet....

Hi december
I am new to this site and am by no means an expert, but your story sounds so similar to mine.
My husband was ill and not able to work- I kept believing that he would get back to work relatively quickly and things would be sorted then. After about 6 months we realised this was not the case - the stress of money worries, letters. phone calls, sherriff officers etc made things 100 times worse. It was then that we decided to face up to things and we were sequestrated ( Scottish form of BR). Looking back I wish we had actually done it sooner, as it took four years for my husband to get better, and even now he can only work part time - if we had waited, things would have been much worse.
At the time I felt such a failure, we had both worked hard since leaving school and it felt like we were losing everything we had worked for. I really hit rock bottom, but could not speak to my husband about how I was feeling as he was so ill. We only told two family members so for the past 3 years I feel like I have been hiding a dirty secret.
Sequestration lasts for three years and we are due to be discharged in August.
Things look so much brighter for us now. I am not saying that BR is an easy way out, but for some people, who for whatever circumstances, it is the only way to keep their health and in some cases their life. I am glad we made the decision when we did, if I could change anything it would have been to have a crystal ball to fors ee what was ahead of us so we could have avioded being in that position in the first place, but hey don't we all!
Good luck next week - I am sure you will feel much better.0 -
I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who replied the other day and to my other posts. I had a cheque come through today from the Teacher Support Network towards my bankruptcy fees and in a way that has kind of made the decision easier, as they had advised that they probably wouldn't be able to turn the application around that quickly. In a way (although I know it sounds silly), it's like it is meant to nudge me in that direction, if the cheque hadn;t have arrived I might have carried on thinking about postponing it.
I will be posting my I&E up in the next few days for people to tell me what they think the OR might pull me up on.
Thanks again

I'm a teacher too, now retired and pride made me put off BR when I was really struggling....so I know how you feel and so do many others.
But once you start and get through the process, the relief is immense and in the end being able to sleep nights is what counts.
Everything Mrsh says is right.
