Is that bricks set into the ground at soil height? I found this one of the easiest edges, you can mow right over them. On of my raised beds has grass right up to the edge of a board and as the mower won't get right up to the edge, its a right pain. Ok if you want to go round with a strimmer afterwards, but I haven't got the time to do that.

Yes, that's how I've got them. Dead easy to do, easy to mow over, looks nice and you can pick up bricks really easily, I've managed to get a fair few off Freecycle so it hasn't cost a lot.

If you have straight edged borders, you could buy some of the six inch high "skirting boards" which are used at the bottom of fences and stain them with some cheap "Forest Green" wood stain from B & Q. You can obtain them singly or in packs of five (each one about 6 feet long) from Wickes, and probably other DIY places like B & Q.

How about Decking boards on their side painted with fence paint?

How do you fix these into the ground? we have a raised bed t the end of our garden and were looking at using railway sleepers to tidy up the front, but they are gonna be very expensive. The bed is 9 metres long and we want the front to be about 50 cm high minimum.
  • When i moved into my house there were bricks on a slant edging the flowerbeds. The problem was that whenever it rained hard the bricks werent high enough to keep the soil in and the soil all washed onto the patio - very messy!!
