Stupid bank charges!

Hi,
I have only just joined today but this site is very useful i am however very annoyed!
I park on a small car park near my work and pay by cheque every month the fees.
I paid a cheque on 11th March 2008 (when I had sufficient funds in my account).
i then received a text message yesterday asking me to phone a number, they said that I needed to pay £80.52 immediately for a cheque that has bounced, I told them I couldn't pay it then and would have to go into my branch today, they said Ok.
I first thought it was a scam as it sounded like one of the other threads.
I went into my bank after receiving a letter last night from them and asked them to confirm if I had charges, they did and the person I spoke to yesterday was correct my account was £80.52 overdrawn.
I have had to pay it as I didn't want to get a bad credit rating but, however, it turns out that the cheque I wrote on 11th March had only been cashed in on 14th MAY and therefore there werent sufficient funds.
If they had cashed my cheque when I had paid it then it would have cleared but due to them waiting over two months to cash it i have now incurred £50.52 in charges for a £30.00 cheque.
Does anyone know if there is anything I can do as I don't think this is fair, it wasn't my fault. Ok I should have checked my account but I just presumed it would have cleared that week
any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks, Polo_nelly

I know it's easy to forget about cheques written and if you've not got much in the way of funds available, this can happen.
If this is the first time something like this has happened, you could ask the bank if they will waive the charges as a gesture of goodwill. Let them know if you're normally a good customer and it was a genuine oversight.
If they refuse, you will need to read the links in my signature to see what your options are.0 -
Thanks, I will see what they say
