Returned Direct Debit and Charge £30 - Nationwide

I have a nationwide account which I have been using to only pay money into with one direct debit going out a month (Internet). I canceled the Internet which still had one payment going out which I totally ignored - my fault.
Basically I had £22 funds in my account, they were all in the attached e-savings. A £27.01 final direct debit was returned and a £30 charge put on the account. If the direct debit went through I would have been charged £20 for a £4 overdraft (at least its slightly better than £30). This is the first charge on the account (held for only 4 months though)
I had a similar occurance with natwest but they refunded the charge instantly when I asked threatening to cancel account (held 10 years) and credit card with them.
I have range nationwide nicely, then with a bit of pressure and then threatening to close the account but with no luck. As i have only held the account for a few months and with only a cashcard I don't have as much stand as I did with Natwest.
Does anyone have any tips or if there is any chance of getting this money back? Would a letter help?
If I really wanted to try and claim it back in court (I have a gap between my next uni year and nothing to do...) could I really claim £30?!
Thanks
