Due to petrol prices rises I have now become the owner of a little orang car a Fiat secentio 2001 Y reg 1.1 I know that the tax class was changed in 2001 am I right in thinking that as my car is pre-51 reg I am on the old tax system? Would be nice if it could be cheaper!
Advice welcome plz.

Look on the log book for the Date of First Registration.
If that date is prior to March 2001, then your car is Private Light Goods (will also be stated on the Taxation Class part of the log book).
Don't automatically assume that if you're on the PLG tax class your tax would be cheaper. Doesn't always work out that way!
My mate has a dodge ram pickup and due to it being an import it was put under the PLG taxation class at £200 for the year. If it went off emissions, it would be Band B LPG tax class at a much lower rate!
This is one common misconception people had when I worked at the DVLA.;)I am not a complete idiot - some parts are missing;)0 -
just checked our slip thing as waiting for V5 and it says the 8/5/ 2001 now what does that mean with regard to tax class?Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!0

You get to pay £120 a year instead of ...... £120 a year under the old scheme.
Before 1st March 2001 it was done by engine size, you car fell into the lower of two brackets which meant £120 a year.
But your car was registered after this, so is under the new scheme which is done by CO2 emmissions. You have a band C car, band C cars pay £120 road tax.
The rule changes hit the gas guzzlers, someone with a big engine car registered before 1st March 2001 pays £185, registered after 1st March and in a high CO2 band and suddenly that are paying £400+ - for exactly the same car.
Parkers tell you road tax costs for different cars:
