Problem with Drivers

My PC is constantly crashing with an IE error reporting back to Microsoft. At the end of the report it states that I have an error which requires a Drivers update. I was advised to go to My Computer, hardware properties and look for a yellow asterik and update that. Only problem is that there is no yellow asterik against any hardware items listed.
Any advice welcom from a PC novice.

When the error occurs. Does the error message include an error number?

If it does, write it down, and let us know what this number is. It can be looked up to give a clearer idea of the problem.

try downloading this to clean/fix the registry...it's free for 30 days and is a fully working version

Ace Utilities - Tools like Registry Cleaner, Disk Cleaner, Duplicate File Finder, Internet History Eraser, Startup Manager, etc.

    Thaks for the reply.

My PC was built by a friend from bits he had left over from a rebuild. As for Windows, he bought XP and fitted it to the system some 7 months ago. Is the other problem re Drivers update a seperate issue to this one?

it could be that he upgraded an old hard disk to XP

Latest driver problem has come up as,
C-MEDIA AC97 AUDIO DEVICE. When I click on the bubble my PC crashes.I did a Google search and found the following site. Driver detective.
I ran the programme which showed that I had 7 Driver faults. I was then invited to pay $29 to fix these 7 faults.
My question, is it worth paying the money to repair. As I have very little computer knowledge, could this solve my PC from crashing?

Have you got a driver disk for the motherboard ?, or if you know the manufacturer and model number of your motherboard, go to the makers website and download the latest xp compatible drivers.

    Thanks for the reply.
The problem is that I know nothing about the PC. As stated earlier, it was put together by a pal and he is now on the some island in the Pacafic! (Working) Can I look at what mother board I have in my properties?
