was told once to use a wallpaper steamer to take it off but never tried it so dont know if it works or not

There isn't really an easy way to do this, it's a pain of a job. Not difficult, just a pain.

My house was coated in just about every room when I bought it and by the time I got to the last one, I found that using a steam machine like you'd use for wallpaper stripping helped. You can steam the Artex then scrape off with a scraper, just like wallpaper. The steam helped soften the Artex, it didn't come off as easy as wallpaper mind, but it did help.

Make sure the ceiling is completely dry before you do anything else to it, like filling imperfections, painting etc.

You can also get products to skim over the Artex effectively giving a flat ceiling again, but I've no experience of these so can't say how good they are.

    Small word of warning:

    Asbestos Warning
Some older texturing materials and Artex (pre 1985) may contain asbestos and it is extremely unwise to sand down or scrape without seeking the advice of an asbestos specialist. The amounts, if any, are very small. The best way is to leave the surface untouched and to have it re-plastered. Always wear a dust mask. Contact your local Council or Authority for further information.

Needless to say, I found out about this AFTER I'd scraped all mine off.

We were in the same position a couple of months ago. My Dad recommended a wallpaper stripper to soften the artex then scrape it off but said it is a messy job. We were also having the walls re-skimmed so asked the plasterer if he could do anything. He told us to go over the design lightly with a paintscraper just to take off the pointy bits of artex (it was broken leather pattern) then he would skim it at the same time as doing the walls. It looks brilliant.....you can't tell at all that it has artex underneath it.

Sorry about that - if it was in Luton, could well of been me that coated it, our first house looked like a Christmas Cake, by the time we'd finished!!

NEVER AGAIN - all smooth skimmed walls & not a piece of wallpaer, either!!

Is the most annoying thing ever
  • Thanks everyone for your time, think the best option would be to skim it.

  • Skimming it is easier, as recommended by Sarah Beanie too.
