HW + CH Control Panel question

Hi guys

The control panel thingie on the HW/CH system in my new flat is very basic, and doesnt let me have heating on its own; I have to have it with hot water.This is a real problem for me, as I dont usemuch hot water, but do need the heating a lot.

I am just wondering if it is possible to just buy a new control box and replace my old one, or do I need to make actual change to the plumbing system ?

If you have a system that will won't let you have ch on it's own, then it is very likely that you will have what they call a four pipe (or gravity) system - a flow and return pipe goes to your hw cylinder, and a separate flow and return goes via the pump to your radiators. The hw will be on whenever the boiler is on - it is the pump which determines whether the ch is on or not.

It is not possible to just change the timer, you need to make some changes to the plumbing and add a motorised valve to convert to a two pipe (or fully pumped) system which will allow you to have ch only. Some really old boilers cannot be converted at all.
